Your Dream Garden

Garden Dreaming by Meenal Patel Studio

There are many ways to design and plant. While we can't sow seeds outdoors in January, there is one project we can tackle - making plans. Your overall garden plan will determine how much enjoyment you get out of your space. However, certain elements can make for a more pleasant garden journey. Here are three things to ponder and explore this month.

What is your Garden’s Purpose

One of the first questions we ask our design clients is how they plan to use their gardens. Are they growing food, entertaining or relaxing? Our gardens always begin with a purpose. Our own garden is for peace and rejuvenation. We are in awe of its beauty; time flies when we're puttering around. It puts us in touch with nature. The ladybugs, bees, butterflies. We are only half kidding when we say our garden helps us save a ton on therapy.

Garden Location

Proximity is vital to the garden. It keeps you on top of weeding, watering, and the daily/weekly rhythm of blooms. We are conscious of how our plantings look inside our homes. We find the best-tended gardens are near the kitchen door/window. Why? You spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and eating, so if it's top of mind, you'll keep it well tended.

Our second favorite location is the front porch. It's the perfect spot for a fragrant garden. We love making a coffee and then puttering around the flower beds, and even better in the evening when the scent is enhanced by the day's sunshine.

Start Small

Be realistic about what you can take care of. We always ask design clients how much time they want to commit to their garden each week. It takes practice to cultivate ample space. One flower bed might be enough.

New additions to the garden are always satisfying, but for your sanity, have a space ready to go before you bring your new green friend home. Assume everything you plant will grow larger than you think. Read the labels and understand how large your plant will eventually get.

The secret to gardening is patience, love, and devotion. Gardening isn't a perfect art; accidental beauty is one of the great pleasures of gardening.

**We are limiting our Spring maintenance schedule this year (we’ll explain the why behind this later!) so if you’re interested in a quick clean-up reach out to Nic@larkspurlandscapeco.com today to get on our March/April schedule.

Dream on, fellow green thumbs!
