A Front Yard Evolution

Transforming a Water-Thirsty Lawn into a Colorado Oasis: A Front Yard Evolution

When D approached us with her vision for a sustainable front yard in Arvada, we knew this project would perfectly showcase how water-wise design can create stunning curb appeal. The transformation began with removing the existing lawn and sculpting gentle berms to add dimension and interest to the previously flat landscape.

The design centered around a striking circular gravel feature, creating a focal point that doubles as a gathering space. We anchored the space with a Blue Totem Spruce, its silvery-blue needles providing year-round structure and color. Our plant palette embraced proven survivors: Russian Sage, Joe Pye Weed, and Blonde Ambition Grass create movement and structure, while White Gaura and Coneflowers provide waves of seasonal color. Each selection was made with pollinators in mind, ensuring the garden contributes to local biodiversity.

Key Design Elements:

  • Curved gravel patio with decorative bird bath

  • Native and drought-resistant plantings

  • Strategic boulder placement for natural character

  • Soil berming for visual interest and improved drainage

In a time when every drop counts, this garden stands as proof that water conservation can be beautiful. As these plants establish and mature, they'll create an increasingly resilient landscape that thrives in harmony with Colorado's natural systems.
