In 2021 we were commissioned to bring a yard back to life. . .
A loving family approached us to redesign their backyard. Our common goal was to revitalize a dull lawn (Keep in mind, turf is synthetic, uninteresting, and straightforward!).
We removed the turf, improved the soil, and laid new sod. We firmly believe that the yards and green spaces around your home are an invaluable extension of playtime, exploration, and creating memories.
Our client's two beautiful children needed a space to play, swing, explore, roll around in the grass and simply spend time outside. We realized that with a rich, wild, and native palette, this yard could be teeming with bugs, birds, and bees. So we set out to attract pollinators back.
We created a garden for the children filled with Obedient Plants, Jupiter's beard, Lamb's ear, Daisies (because we never miss the opportunity to make a daisy chain!), Dill, and Chamomile. To label the plants and add a touch of whimsicality, we handpainted rocks with ladybugs, bees, and mushrooms.
Given our client's background in flowers, we wanted to ensure that she could cut flowers from her own yard. We planted cutting flowers, including hot weather lovers like Zinnia and the fragrant Calamint.
One element of design important to our clients was "moments." They were excited to add the coziness of an outdoor fire so we surrounded the intimate space with pollinator favorites (that add excellent winter interest!) like Russian Sage, grasses, Yarrow, Whirling Butterflies, and Scabiosa.
We cut a beautiful, flower-lined path through the garden that is shaded by adding Plumbago, Hostas, Jacob's Ladders, and Hydrangeas.
To add a touch of privacy, we custom-built a trellis to host a Clematis and Honeysuckle.
One year after, this yard is an explosion of color, a habitat for kids, birds and bees to co-exist, and a space for a family to capture fleeting moments together.
