Spring Blooming Bulbs

Patience is a gardening virtue, and the best gardens are created by those who think a season or two ahead.

Daffodils, hyacinths, snowdrops, crocuses, and tulips are welcome sights for those excited to exit the doldrums of Winter. We plant Spring-flowering bulbs in the Autumn, allowing them the opportunity to chill before their gorgeous entry into our muted landscapes. Bulbs need to be planted at least six weeks before the ground freezes. We are lucky, in Colorado we can bulbs most of the Winter. We’ve even planted bulbs as late as January with success.

If you are longing for colors and scents of Spring in your garden, jot down notes of where there is an empty canvas - think under trees and edging along walkways. We love planting bulbs behind perennials that will grow and cover the Spring foliage as it fades.

So, where do you go from here? You have two options. Yes, there is some level of instant gratification should you need it; nurseries and stores are selling tulips and daffodils, and they can be transplanted in your yard and will likely come back next season, but you’ll be spending around $7 per plant. Option number two: Set a calendar reminder to call us in late October with your spring bulb wishlist, and your dollars will go much further.

Bring joy to your neighborhood and welcome the bees back with a colorful springtime palette!
