“Packing the Border” is a technique of planting perennials OVER bulbs for a succession of bloom.

Suitable for use with most spring bulbs (although daffodils may flop over and smother their friends), lillies, tulips, and allium bulbs are excellent options.

How to:

  • Dig a hole 8-10 inches deep.

  • Throw in a bit of compost and set the bulbs.

  • Fill with more compost and soil about four inches to the top.

  • Put smaller spring bulb on top - crocus, siberian squill, mini iris + daffodil or a combination.

  • Before you finish filling the whole, plant a summer blooming perennial on top - yarrow or campanula work well.

The results are beautiful. First the crocus blooms, then the tulips and just when the spring bulbs go brown, the emerging perenials mask them.

Compost is key. Thick mulch helps and adds humus to the soil as it breaks down.
